The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of a plume of ash rising from Mount Etna on December 28.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A short but intense flank eruption at Italy’s Mount Etna sent a large column of ash and gas into the atmosphere on December 24. According to the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center, the volcanic ash cloud rose up to 18,000 feet (5.5 km) above sea level. A swarm of at least 130 earthquakes accompanied the event, with the largest recorded at 4.8 magnitude early on December 28 with an epicenter near the villages of Viagrande, Trecastagni, and Fleri according to a report by Volcano Discovery.

The Volcano Discovery website also reported that satellite data shows that the volcano has changed shape due to the intrusion of magma which, in some areas, rose to the surface through the new eruptive fissures and in other areas became shallow and deeper intrusions. The scientists who analyzed the satellite data estimate that the western slope of Etna moved 30 cm (11.8 in) to the west and 50 cm (19.7 in) to the east.

At about 3,329 meters (10,922 feet) high, the complex stratovolcano is one of Europe’s largest and most active volcanoes. It has been in near-constant eruption for over 2,000 years.
