Une relique de la porte Saint-Jean
« La porte Saint-Jean (Lieu historique national des Fortifications-de-Québec), la troisième à prendre place sur son emplacement actuel, a été construite au tournant de l’année 1939. Celle qui l’avait précédée avait été démolie en 1897 pour laisser le passage au tramway électrique. En lieu et place, on avait construit, de chaque côté de la rue, un mur pour soutenir les terres du rempart. Sur le mur de soutènement sud, une pierre portait l’inscription «St John’s Gate». Elle est toujours en place. En face, sur le mur nord, une autre inscription similaire apparaissait, mais en français cette fois-ci, soit «Porte St-Jean» (photo). En 1929, on déplace le mur nord pour créer un passage donnant accès à l’Arsenal fédéral, aujourd’hui le parc de l’Artillerie. On y installe alors une nouvelle pierre portant une inscription légèrement différente: «Porte Saint-Jean». En 1939, lors de la construction de la porte actuelle, cette inscription est disparue derrière la nouvelle porte, mais seulement de la vue des passants. En effet, elle est toujours en place et partiellement visible à l’intérieur de la porte. » – Société historique de Québec
