Description

O castelo de Torres Vedras foi conquistado aos muçulmanos por D. Afonso Henriques, em 1148, que doou esta fortificação a D. Fuas Roupinho, cavaleiro que colaborou nas lutas pela reconquista cristã da península e é protagonista da lenda da Nazaré.

Nos reinados de D. Dinis, de D. Fernando e também de D. Manuel I, em 1516, o castelo teve obras de reconstrução e melhoria das defesas, uma preocupação que pode estar ligada ao facto de este castelo ter servido de residência a diversos reis. O terramoto de 1755 causou elevados danos ao castelo, mas só com as invasões francesas, em 1810, o castelo seria reparado e adaptado para o uso de artilharia. Vindo também a intervir nas guerras liberais.

Classificado como Imóvel de Interesse Público, tem vindo a beneficiar de obras de restauro, da responsabilidade da Câmara Municipal de Torres Vedras.
