NARC-2709B6 : Dolphin Brooch : Roman
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy Colchester derivativem double-lugged, Harlow type brooch of Roman date (AD 43-100). The head comprises sub-rectangular wings, one of which is terminates in an old abraded break. At the back of the wings is a projecting attachment lug, with a central perforation which, would have held the wire pin which is now missing. The wings are decorated with an incised circumferential line at the end of each.
A circular sectioned bow extends centrally from the front of the wings curving to form an arch and tapering steadily in width and thickness to the foot. The worn remains of a catchplate extend from the reverse of the lower bow. The lower section of the bow, above the catchplate, has been bent at close to 90 degrees.

The metal is dark green in colour with a predominantly smooth.

Length: 32.83mm, Width: 13.06mm, Thickness: 5.84mm, Weight: 3.1g.

Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.299, fig.366A and are dated to the 1st century AD.
