Summary[edit]
DescriptionNSF-supported Research Facilities.jpg |
English: With NSF support, the U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) provides safe and secure storage and curation of ice cores recovered by researchers from the Earth’s Polar Regions. The facility, located in the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, Colo., enables scientists to study the cores and learn about the Earth’s climate history without having to travel to remote field sites. Researchers are learning a lot about the Earth’s changing climate from the WAIS Divide ice core, which is housed at the lab. WAIS stands for West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The WAIS Divide is a high point on the ice sheet where the ice begins to flow in different directions. Cold rooms.Pictured above, a one-meter section at the bottom of the WAIS Divide ice core –recovered from a depth of 3,405 meters (11,160 feet). Find out more about the NICL in the episode of Science Nation at www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/science_nation/icecorela... and read about recent study results at www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=133298 . |
