Description
Cinque statue in bronzo rappresentanti giovani donne stanti (peplophorai) in vari atteggiamenti; esse furono definite da Winckelmann "Danzatrici", reinterpretate da P. Zanker "portatrici di acqua" (hydrophorai), mentre negli anni cinquanta esse sono state comprese come "Danaidi", le sciagurate figlie di Danao condannate per i loro misfatti ad attingere acqua in eterno. Oggi più correttamente si indicano semplicemente come peplophorai.

Credit line Herculaneum, Villa dei Papiri, peristilio rettangolare. Per il loro numero (5 + 1 più piccola) e per le loro basi che risultano dritte sul davanti ma semicircolari sul retro, si presuppone che originariamente esse decorassero i bordi dell'euripo situato al centro del peristilio quadrato (che difatti presenta sei nicchie al suo interno), e che la loro collocazione al tempo dell'eruzione nel peristilio rettangolare fosse solo provvisoria a causa dei lavori di ristrutturazione in corso nella villa.
