The Prairie State is also known as the Land of Lincoln. While visiting the state, you’re never far from landmarks and monuments dedicated to the 16th president’s life. In fact, his legacy marked the beginning of a long history of presidents who called Illinois home. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site, in Springfield, preserves the only home Lincoln ever owned as well as his four-block neighborhood restored to its mid-19th Century appearance. The Abraham Lincoln National Heritage Area explores more of the 16th President’s early years across 42 counties. Back in the Windy City, Pullman National Historical Park, National Park Service stands as an evocative testament to the evolution of American industry, the rise of unions and the labor movement, the lasting strength of good urban design, and the remarkable journey of the Pullman porters toward the civil rights movement of the 20th century.
