Summary[edit]

Description
English: Newnes, NSW - railway line, train entering tunnel (c.1911) Daily Telegraph (Sydney) 21 Jan 1911, page 15. Original caption reads, "HE TRAIN ENTERING THE TUNNEL AT PENROSE GORGE, BETWEEN NEWNES AND DEANE.

This gorge is one of remarkable scenic beauty. It is a natural weather-worn channel through a thick strata of .sandstone, vary ing from a few feet to a few yards in width. A stream of clear, sparkling water follows its entire length, and the beautiful tree ferns and other vegetation. Conspicuous among the flowers are those of the tobacco plant, which is just now in gorgeous bloom. The smoke from the train obscures the entrance to the tunnel, which is straight ahead, while the gorge lakes a sweep at this point to the right. This railway line was constructed by the Commonwealth Oil Corporation in connection with theirworks, at Newnes.
