“昔 此駅に何某の浪人妻妊娠しける 夫ハ忠義の為に吾妻（あづま）へ赴くに 其帰（かえり）を待居たりし ある夜 佐夜の中山沓掛松原にて盗賊出て恋慕し 絶（たへ）ざるにより斬殺し行衛（ゆくえ）しれす 此女日比（ひごろ）念ずる観世音僧と現じ 亡婦の懐なる赤子に飴をあたへ養育なさしむ 夫此事をしらず 夢見あしきゆへ 急ぎ我家へ帰る道にて夜啼石のはなしを聞て なほなほ奇異の思ひをなし 夜にかヽり沓掛松原の石の辺（ほと）りを通りしに 妻の亡霊あらハれ くハしき事を物語り懐の赤子を渡し 夫（それ）より魂魄（こんはく）付（つき）まとひて 終に敵を討（うた）しけり“
