Summary

[edit]
Description 3D print of a SARS-CoV-2 virus particle, which is the virus that causes COVID-19. The virus surface (blue) is covered with spike proteins that enable the virus to enter and infect human cells. The orange spikes represent the open, active form. The beige spikes represent the closed, inactive state. The coronavirus surface spikes give this virus family its name – corona, which is Latin for “crown,” as most any coronavirus will have a crown-like appearance. This SARS-CoV-2 virus model is based on the latest available data in the Protein Data Bank (PDB) and imaging studies conducted by NIAID labs. Scan the QR code on the right to learn more.
