Description Oath of Allegiance taken by Susan Burbridge from Logan County, Kentucky, on September 18, 1863 in Camp Douglas, Chicago. Note: There was no general requirement for women to pledge the oath of allegiance during the Civil War. Some women did take the oath in order to file a claim for confiscated property, to draw rations from the Union Army, or to be married.
