English: 1 octavin maker unknown, Germany, circa 1900 lacquered blackwood, nickel-silver ferrules and keys, overall length 456 mm 1998.60.162 Castle 247 (presented George 1960) Invented by the German, Julius Jehring in 1894, the octavin is an instrument like a doubled-back conical-bored clarinet over-blowing at the octave. It was later patented and made by others, but it never became an accepted member of orchestras or bands.
