Summary[edit]

Description
English: Thick, dark plumes of smoke rose from two oil production and storage facilities in Libya on January 7, 2016. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image at 9:35 Universal time (11:35 a.m. local time) on that same day. The dense plumes rise from red hot spots and blow strongly to the southeast. Hot spots mark areas where the thermal bands on the MODIS instrument detected areas significantly warmer than background. When accompanied by smoke such hot spots indicate actively burning fire.

The fires were reported burning at Libya's National Oil Company facilities near Sidra and Ra's Lanuf. According to news reports, five oil storage tanks were burning: four near Sidra and one near Ra's Lanuf. Each tank is believed to contain 420,000 to 460,000 barrels of oil.

The fires were ignited during battles in Libya which occurred on January 4-6. The oil company reported that the fires had been extinguished by January 9.
