La collection couvre une large variété de sujets. Elle documente les réalisations du Brésil et des Brésiliens au 19ème siècle et comprend également de nombreuses photographies d'Europe, d'Afrique et d'Amérique du Nord. La ville portuaire de Recife, qui apparaît sur cette photo, fut l'une des premières colonies au Brésil. Fondée à la fin des années 1500 par les Portugais, elle est restée sous contrôle néerlandais durant une partie du 17e siècle. A ses débuts Recife comptait une importante population juive, et était également un point d'entrée pour de nombreux esclaves africains. L'influence de ce mélange des cultures sur la personnalité de Recife s'est poursuivie au 19ème siècle, époque où cette photo a été prise par Mortiz Lamberg, qui a travaillé au studio d'Alberto Henschel. The collection covers a wide variety of subjects. It documents the achievements of Brazil and Brazilians in the 19th century and also includes many photographs of Europe, Africa, and North America. The port city of Recife, which appears in this photograph, was one of the earliest settlements in Brazil. Established in the late 1500s by the Portuguese, it was under Dutch control for part of the 17th century. Early Recife boasted a sizable Jewish population and was also an entry point for many African slaves. The influence of this mix of cultures on Recife’s character continued into the 19th century, when this picture was taken by Mortiz Lamberg, who worked in the studio of Alberto Henschel. The German-born Henschel was one of Brazil’s most prolific portrait photographers. Lamberg later became a respected photographer in his own right, publishing the photography book Brasilien.

A cidade portuária de Recife, que aparece nesta fotografia, foi uma das primeiras colônias no Brasil. Estabelecida no final da década de 1500 pelos portugueses, ficou sob o domínio holandês durante parte do século XVII.
