Title
English: Oldest, or earliest, legible stone at St. Paul's
Description
English:

Light grey gravestone, with inscription. Grass and a tree are also visible.

This simple grave marker records the burial location of Matthew Valentine (MV), who died ((D) on Feb 14, 1704. Town population was perhaps 250, when almost everybody knew each other, and hence initials were sufficient to identify the deceased. Carvers also had limited skills and tools, and the smaller the inscription the better. His death on Valentine's Day is a interesting coincidence. Photo was taken, with chalk on the inscription, in the 1930s.
