In de 17de eeuw ging het niet meer goed met de stad Damme. Door de ontvolking werd de immense kerk en de onderhoudsfactuur veel te groot. In 1725 werd het stuk tussen de toren en het huidige kerkgebouw gesloopt; de rondbogen bleven staan ter ondersteuning van de toren. Ook de vervallen spits werd toen van de toren gehaald. In the 17th century the prosperity of Damme didn't last and depopulation made the church too big and the cost of its maintenance too high. In 1725 the part between the tower and what is now the church, was pulled down; only the round arches had to remain to support the tower. The decayed pointy tower was also removed. |
