Summary[edit]

Description

On top of an altar tomb in the Sanctuary is a brass to Reynald (Reynold) Peckham and his wife Elizabeth (Cartwright) d. 1599. Reynold was originally from Wrotham in Kent, died in July 1551. He is dressed in full armour with dagger and his feet rest upon a greyhound. His wife wears the fashion of the time with a French head-dress. The brass is actually a Palimpsest cut from a German or Flemish brass of the 14th C. In fact four old brasses were re-used for this one brass! The inscription plate reads: ‘of your charite p[ra]y for ze sowlle of Reynolde Peckh[a]m of Wroth[a]m in the countie of Kente Esquyer whiche decessyd the XXI day of July in the yere of o[u]r lorde god mcccccli whose sowlle god perdon.’

The inscription around the altar tomb is from Job: ‘For I know that my Redeemer liveth and that I shall rise from the earth and shall be clad again with this skin and in my own flesh I shall see God whom I myself shall see and my eyes shall look upon and none other.’
