On April 9 1981 Prince Charles was presented with an honorary degree of Doctor of Literature from the University of Otago. The ceremony took place at Dunedin Town Hall. Prince Charles was in New Zealand on a Royal Tour from March 31 to April 12 1981. In his acceptance speech for the award, Prince Charles commented “I am especially honoured to join my grandmother, the Queen Mother who received her degree from the University of Auckland. This degree I have just received is from New Zealand’s southern-most university. I am not sure if this helps or exacerbates the friendly rivalry that exists between the South and North Islands” These images are from a file held by Archives New Zealand transferred by the Department of Internal Affairs.
