English: The enclosed image is of Periyar National Park, Kerala, India.
It can be categorized under the ‘Tiger reserves in India’ and ‘National parks of India’. Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve, Thekkady, Kerala is a gift of nature in the God’s own country, Kerala. It is a protected area sprawling over an area of about 900 sq km and a home for many rare and endangered flora and fauna. It forms the major watershed of the two important rivers, the Periyar and the Pamba. It is located high in the mountain region of Cardamom hills in the southern Western Ghats along the borders of Tamil Nadu. It is notable as an elephant reserve and tiger reserve. The topography consists of steep and rolling hills which are thickly wooded. The sanctuary surrounds the Periyar Lake, a reservoir measuring 26 sq km which was formed when the Mullaperiyar Dam was erected in 1895. Humid climate prevails here. Temperature varies from 12°C in winter to 35°C in summer. The park consists of Tropical evergreen and moist deciduous type forest. There are different species of floras flowering plants, orchids and grass. Around 33 species of mammals are recorded to dwell here which include Bengal tigers, gaurs, Indian elephants, wild pig, jungle cat, Nilgiri martens etc. Hundreds of species of reptiles, birds, insects are also found here. The enclosed image is of the submerged trees in Periyar Lake with birds dwelling there. |
