Summary[edit]

Description
English: Visual presentation of the PRICE-MOUTH crossover on a vowel chart, originally a part of Closing diphthongs of Cockney on a vowel chart.svg (please do not use it near this image, there is almost never a need to duplicate the information.)

The PRICE-MOUTH crossover is a phonetic phenomenon occurring in many accents of English (Cockney, Estuary, Australian, New Zealand, broad South African, New York) whereby the first element of the PRICE vowel (traditionally transcribed /aɪ/) is markedly more back than the first element of the MOUTH vowel (traditionally transcribed /aʊ/).

Note that the chart is phonetically accurate only as far as Cockney is concerned; in the case of other dialects, it may or may not be phonetically accurate, so bear that in mind.
