Description |
English: The Pacific Net and Twine Company (later Pacific Marine Supply, then Pacific Marine Schwabacher, Inc.) was founded in 1897 in Seattle by Scottish immigrants Edward Cunningham (1878-1960) and Donald B. McBride (1862-1945). Originally selling netting and twine out of a basement, by 1913 the company had grown and moved its operations to Pier 8. In 1918 the company moved once more, this time to it's own building on Western Avenue. In the 1920s the company pioneered the manufacture of fire-fighting pumpers, developed primarily to aid in the protection of Pacific coast forests. By the onset of World War II the company had converted all of its facilities to the manufacture of fire-fighting equipment for the U. S. Navy. The company continued to operate in Seattle until the mid-1980s. This image was taken about 1918 during construction of the company's building at 1223 Western Avenue.
