This is a pochette, a miniature or pocket violin, used by dance instructors, who could play it, then pocket it to demonstrate. Also known as a kit. Evolved from the rebec. Gradually cam to look more and more like a violin.
Associated with the a’,e”,b” and g’,d”,a” tunings or g,d’,a’,e” for a four string instrument(information from http://www.nrinstruments.demon.co.uk/Bowed3.html).
Two different lithographs show a difference in spelling: either mandörean or mandörgen. In either case the current name is mandore.
The "chor" in this name refers to a range of pitches, a system used in Praetorius's books. An instrument tuned to "Chorthon" would be a pitch lower than one tuned to "Cammerthon". Information from http://www.nrinstruments.demon.co.uk/lutesize.html.
