Title |
Palaeolithic flint handaxe |
||
Description |
English: A flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolithic date.
The axe has been made from a nodule or large flake. The base is slightly convex, a transverse flake having been removed in an attempt to flatten it. The convex sides taper towards a (possibly damaged) tip. The thickness also tapers from the base to the tip. Both surfaces exhibit working in the form of broad flakes which radiate downwards and outwards from the centre. On one side finer flake scars are visible just below the tip and the other edges show possible evidence of wear or grinding. On one of the long sides, just above the base of the axe, there is a broad, flat, vertical surface, which possibly represents part of a core platform. The flint - visible at the point of a relatively modern break at the base - is dark grey in colour. A short distance from the base is an irregular depression caused by the presence of a fossil inclusion. The surface of the axe is a heavily patinated light creamy-brown to mid-orange colour. The side without the fossil inclusion retains a small amount of cortex. The artefact measures 114.3mm long, 68.8mm wide and 29.7mm thick. It weighs 231.35g. |
