Title
Papal Bulla of Pope Gregory IX, reverse view
Description
English: Complete lead Papal Bulla. This Bulla is circular in plan. It has a diameter of 38.58mm, is 4.36mm thick and weighs 45.57g. One side is decorated with the moulded design of the bearded head of St Peter to the right and the bearded head of St Paul to the left. The heads are divided by a cross and are surrounded by a moulded beaded border that may represent their halos. This design is all within a beaded border that runs the circumference of the object. Above the heads is the description S'PA S'PE, for St Peter and Paul. The reverse side has a moulded beaded border, within which is the moulded, raised inscription GRE/GORIVS/PP.VIIII over three lines. This tells us the Bulla was attached to documents sent by Pope Gregory IX (VIIII) between AD1227 and AD1241. The object has a dark grey patina with patches of creamy white. It is damaged slightly above the S'PA S'PE inscription and the whole object is slightly buckled, but is otherwise in good condition.
