| Description |
On this day 30 August 1936 the Wellington to Auckland express ploughed into a slip near Paraparaumu after a night of torrential rain. The town rallied to support the injured as a rescue and salvage effort was launched, but despite their best efforts one person died of their injuries. The slip had occurred in a place never known to have caused trouble before, and as it was round a bend in the track the driver did not see it in time to avoid crashing into it. The engine was completely derailed while one carriage was wrecked and five others damaged. Passengers and rescuers alike worked in atrocious weather to help the injured. They were taken to the house of a Paraparaumu family where they were attended by the local doctor and the district nurse before the more seriously injured were taken to Wellington Hospital. The crash is little remembered today - unlike a much more famous disaster on the same train service, the 1954 Tangiwai Disaster. Shown here is the engineer’s report on the 1936 crash.
