Notes | Canadian Red Cross carton sent to a German POW camp during WW2 and kept as a souvenir by NZ 412222 Douglas Cecil Giddens, RNZAF Bomber Crew The carton is printed Canadian Red Cross Society - Prisoners Parcels - Comite International Croix Rouge, Geneve-Transit. Suisse, and lists the contents of the carton as 14 packets food and 1 piece of soap, 'For Distribution'. Canadian Red Cross carton sent to a German POW camp during WW2. Kept as a souvenir by NZ 412222 Douglas Cecil Giddens, RNZAF Bomber Crew who was shot down over Rossmeer, Germany during WW2. and served 4 years as a POW in Stalag 344, and was one of those who walked on the Long March of about 1,000 miles to freedom in January-May 1945, during the period that Germany began losing the war. He was picked up by the American Forces and taken to England before being repatriated to New Zealand. Born in London on 15 May 1919, Douglas Giddens came to New Zealand as a child - lived in Waihi. Later he lived in Blockhouse Bay Auckland, and most recently has been a resident of the Ranfurly Veterans Home where he died on 2 October 2007. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
