Summary
[edit]DescriptionParonychia brasiliana flower1 (14749941383).jpg |
Introduced, warm-season, perennial, small, mat-forming herb. Stems are scaly or hairy and often woody. Leaves are 3-8 mm long, hairy, linear to lance-shaped and with pointed tips. Flowerheads occur as profuse small clusters of tiny flowers that lack petals; almost hidden by silvery bracts. Flowering is from spring to autumn. A native of South America, it is found in pastures, lawns and disturbed areas; mainly on sandier soils and where ground cover is sparse or plants are very short. An abundance of this species indicates dry soils, overgrazing or other disturbances that have created bare ground and reduced competition. Of little importance to grazing animals as it is very low growing, quite fibrous and produces little bulk. |
