Français : Passage du Chien-d’Or, Quebec, Canada. Cette dénomination fait référence à la pierre du « chien d'or » que l'on peut voir aujourd'hui sur la façade principale de l'édifice Louis-S.-Saint-Laurent. Sur cet emplacement s'élève, au 18e siècle, la maison du marchand Nicolas Jacquin dit Philibert sur laquelle on trouve ce même bas-relief au quatrain mystérieux : « Je suis un chien qui ronge lo / En le rongeant, je prend mon repos / Un tems viendra qui nest pas venu / Que je morderay qui m'aura mordu. ». En 1748, le commerçant Philibert est assassiné. Mots énigmatiques, sombre affaire de meurtre... il n'en faut pas plus pour que naisse la légende du Chien d'Or dont l'écrivain d'origine britannique, William Kirby, tire le roman The Golden Dog (1877) qui lui apporte la célébrité; le roman est traduit par le Québécois Pamphile Le May. Selon certains historiens, c'est le chirurgien Timothée Roussel qui appose la pierre du chien d'or sur la maison qu'il construit en 1688, maison qui est vendue par la suite au marchand Philibert. Roussel est originaire de Notre-Dame de Montpellier dans le sud de la France. Or à Pézenas, ville située non loin de Montpellier, on trouve un chien sculpté en ronde-bosse et le même quatrain, à quelques détails près. Il est daté de 1561. Roussel s'en serait donc inspiré en apposant un chien d'or sur sa résidence de Québec, en souvenir de sa région natale. Cette habitude de placer des chiens d'or sculptés à l'entrée des demeures serait une ancienne coutume de protection déjà en usage dans la Grèce antique |
