Description

O Pelourinho de Campo Maior, obra arquitetónica do séc. XVIII, mais precisamente de 1740, é composto por uma coluna de mármore 2,17m, à qual dão acesso quatro degraus do mesmo material.

Sobre a coluna encontra-se uma esfera de onde saem quatro armações de ferro com o objetivo de a estas se prenderem os criminosos.

No topo da esfera a figura da justiça (de olhos desvendados e portando na mão direita uma balança e na esquerda uma espade) completa esta obre de arte.

Este Pelourinho mede ao todo 6,50m, desde a sua base retangular até ao fim da estatueta. Por volta de 1879 foi mandada retirar de praça D. Luis I (atual Praça da República) por ordem da Câmara Municipal, para se proceder na dita praça a obra de reparação e embelezamento.

Em 1880 com a fundação do Museu Arqueológico de Elvas este foi requisitado e levado para o dito museu por volta de 1903, já bastante maltratado.

Só em 1941, a pedido da Câmara Municipal de Campo Maior, é que este voltou ao lugar onde hoje se encontra e de onde nunca deveria ter saído.
