Oliveira do Hospital é localidade de muito remota origem, inicialmente referida aquando da doação do seu território, feita antes da fundação da Nacionalidade e pela regente D. Teresa, aos Cavaleiros da Ordem de São João do Hospital, ou Hospitalários, em 1122. Terá existido uma primeira carta de foral, certamente dada pelos seus donatários, e referida no foral manuelino, este datado de 1514. E Oliveira do Hospital terá tido o seu próprio pelourinho, ainda que dele não reste qualquer testemunho. De facto, o pelourinho que hoje se ergue na sede de concelho, diante dos Paços do Concelho e do edifício do Tribunal, foi transferido em data incerta (sensivelmente entre 1850 e 1950) para a presente localização, vindo da freguesia de Ervedal da Beira. Trata-se, portanto, da picota de Ervedal, que esteve levantada no antigo Largo da Cadeia desta localidade, e depois no Largo do Lameiro, onde de resto deixou alguns vestígios. Desconhecem-se as razões pelas quais o monumento foi levado para Oliveira do Hospital, mas é provável que tal acontecimento não tivesse relação directa com a simbólica própria da coluna, que de início foi simplesmente utilizada para escorar uma varanda. Já depois de ter sido implantado na presente localização, o pelourinho foi reclamado por Ervedal da Beira, embora até hoje não tenha sido reposto na sua verdadeira sede. O monumento ergue-se sobre soco de três degraus quadrangulares de rebordo boleado, o térreo parcialmente enterrado no pavimento (relvado). Nele assenta um bloco cilíndrico relativamente baixo e largo, que serve de apoio a coluna. Esta possui base de arranque quadrado, seguida de uma composição octogonal constando de gola de faces lisas, sulco fundo, toro, nova gola de faces ligeiramente côncavas, e novo toro. Daqui irrompe o fuste, composto por quatro toros espiralados à direita, rematados por capitel vagamente poligonal, formado por astrágalo e pinha ornada de quadrifólios. Não existe remate.
