Description

A antiga Villa de São João do Monte tem como primeira referência documental uma carta de doação assinada por D. Afonso Henriques, datada de 1131. Poucos anos mais tarde, em 1144, as mesmas terras pertenciam ao cenóbio de Santa Cruz de Coimbra, situação que se terá mantido durante muito tempo, mas da qual aparentemente não resultou qualquer carta de foral para a localidade. O primeiro foral viria das mãos de D. Manuel, em 1514, estabelecendo-se um concelho que foi extinto em 1855, para ser integrado em Tondela. Da sua antiga categoria resta um pelourinho, todavia de factura bastante posterior ao foral.

O pelourinho levanta-se sobre um soco de três degraus de planta quadrada, o superior de rebordo e os inferiores de aresta boleada, estando o térreo parcialmente embebido no pavimento. Assenta numa grande base prismática, rematada em moldura saliente. A coluna tem secção quadrangular, com ressalto na base, faces lisas, e arestas ligeiramente chanfradas, transformando-o num incipiente pilar octogonal. Não existe capitel, e o remate consta de um singelo tronco piramidal truncado, de faces lisas. Nele se crava a grimpa, uma haste de ferro terminada em galo de cata-vento.
