English: Photograph of a painting by J McDonald entitled "He Taua! He taua!" reproduced in an unidentified publication. The painting is signed "J McDonald, 1906". This image is a copy of the photograph of the original painting, and was taken by Albert Percy Godber. The negative shows the full inscription from the book. The painting shows a group of Maori warriors preparing for battle, one man sounding a warning through a conch shell (putatara), others wielding weapons, with other men standing on lookouts above the palisades. |
