Description
English: A spring bloom of phytoplankton colored the waters of the South Atlantic Ocean off of South Africa in early December 2016. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image on December 11. Phytoplankton are microscopic, plant-like organisms that form the basis of the marine food chain, providing nourishment from microscopic, animal-like zooplankton to massive whales, and most organisms in-between. Because they contain chlorophyll, these organisms consume carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, therefore they are also important to the Earth’s carbon cycle.
