Description
English: Swirls and curls of jewel-toned hues graced the waters of the South Pacific Ocean in late December 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this stunning true-color image of a phytoplankton bloom off of New Zealand’s South Island on December 28.

Phytoplankton are microscopic plant-like organisms that live in this location year-round in relatively small numbers. When the right amounts of nutrients and sunshine are present and water temperatures are favorable, phytoplankton begin to reproduce in large numbers, creating huge blooms that are easily seen from space.

This location often spurs rich growth of phytoplankton, thanks to the convergence of cold rivers of water branching from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and flowing north past the east coast of South Island to converge with warmer waters which flow south past North Island. Since phytoplankton form the base of the marine food net, the waters in this area are one of New Zealand’s most biologically productive.
