Description
English: Military map of the city of Lucknow, capital of the state of Oudh, with its military features clearly labelled. At the outbreak of the Great Mutiny in May 1857, 1,700 English and Indian troops fortified the British Residency in Lucknow, 270 miles southeast of Dehli. They took refuge here as a mutineer force approached on 1st July. On 25th September a force of 3,000 men of the British army, commanded by Sir Havelock and Sir James Outram, fought their way into the Residency following their long trek from Cawnpore. The garrison under Sir Henry Havelock held out against 60,000 rebels until Campbell arrived with his relief force in November. According to this map, Havelock reinforced and extended the garrison after his arrival. Relief in the form of ground cover is shown by shading.
