Description: Man with Polio in in iron lung visiting with his family.

Polio, or Poliomyelitis, is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. Muscle weakness, usually in the legs but can also be in the head, neck and diaphragm, can be a symptom of Polio. If a patient's diaphragm was compromised, the early treatment was the use of the iron lung.

The iron lung is the colloquial term for a negative pressure ventilator. This device enables a person to breathe on their own in a normal manner after muscle control has been lost.
