Description

As Muralhas da Almedina datam dos sécs. XII-XIII e constituíram um sistema defensivo da cidade islâmica. Tinham cerca de 1 km de extensão, cercavam sensivelmente 6,5 hectares e protegiam aproximadamente 3200 pessoas. Eram compostas por 17 torres e 3 portas – Porta da Almedina, Porta do Sol e Porta da Azóia. A Porta da Almedina, também designada por Torreão das Portas da Cidade, é a única que perdura. Este torreão situa-se junto à Câmara Municipal e é a principal entrada da cidade. Este monumento constitui uma das duas torres albarrãs das Muralhas de Silves. O seu predominante material de construção é o grés. No interior desta torre albarrã existem 2 salas e anexos, que já albergaram a Casa da Câmara, a Guarda Nacional Republicana e a Biblioteca Municipal. O seu acesso é feito por uma escada exterior, construída posteriormente, e por 2 passadiços originais.
