Title
Post-Medieval Coin: Defaced Halfpenny of George III
Description
English: Copper alloy coin. Halfpenny of George III (1760-1820), third issue, Birmingham mint, dated 1799. It is possible the coin was defaced as an act of political protest. A single round conical pit of diameter 4.6mm appears precisely centred on the King's head. This was struck with enough force to have formed a corresponding flat bulge of diameter 6.7mm on the reverse; it is unlikely a bullet of the period would cause such damage. The name of the monarch is also either differentially worn or erased. The defacing of the Royal image is technically a treasonable act. Republican sentiment was widespread in Britain before the long wars with Napoleonic France (c.1801-1815).

Obverse description: Bust laureate draped right.

Obverse inscription: [---]S III DEI GRATIA REX

Reverse description: Britannia seated left holding sprig aloft.

Reverse inscription: [---]ITA[---] 1799

Diameter: 30.5mm, Weight: 11.87gms, die axis: 6

English: This coin is listed in the Standard Catalogue of British Coins under the ID 3778.
