Title
Post-Medieval Coin: Defaced Penny of George III
Description
English: Copper alloy coin. A penny of George III (1760-1820), fourth issue, Birmingham mint, of 1806-7, defaced by eight crossing cuts in groups of four at right angles to each other. This technically treasonable alteration may signal reformist or republican sentiments on the part of the perpetrator. These were more widespread after the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815, and the damage may have been inflicted on an already worn coin. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1806-7.

Obverse description: Bust laureate draped right, defaced. Inscription lost to wear.

Reverse description: Britannia seated left; inscription lost to wear.

Diameter: 34.3mm, Weight: 17.33gms, die axis: 6
