Title
Post-Medieval Spindle Whorl
Description
English: Medieval lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10.4mm. Moulded relief decoration comprises a pseudo-legend of eight characters each in a rectangular compartment on one side, and a series of pellets scattered across the other side along with a reversed letter R and another possible letter. The mass of the whorl may suggest it was used to ply cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.

Diameter: 33.1mm, Thickness: 16.3mm, Weight: 54.43gms.

Similarly decorated spindle whorls are known from excavations on medieval sites, for example the deserted medieval village of Thrislington (topsoil find; Austin 1989, 137, fig. 58.2).
