Title
Post-Medieval buckle
Description
English:

A cast copper alloy buckle dating to the Post-Medieval period. The object is a D-shaped buckle with a separate cast copper alloy plate attached. The buckle has a wide outer edge decorated with a worn moulded rope-like pattern. The strap bar is narrowed and off set. It is circular in cross-section. The frame is D-shaped in cross-section. At each corner of the frame, either end of the bar has a bifid terminal. The terminals are decorated with a foliate pattern. Attached to the strap bar are the buckle plate and the remains of a pin. The pin consists of a oval strip of copper alloy folded over the strap bar.

The plate is cast with a foliate outline, trefid ends and foliate decoration on one face. It is attached by folding the plate over the bar of the buckle frame and joining the two halves of the plate with two iron rivets. There is a large rectangular slot for the pin attachment. The foliate design of the buckle plate is similar to that seen on plates and hook pieces of sword belt fittings, and this may have been designed to be worn on a sword belt as part of a set of fittings (see Read, R 2001 Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, pages 39 & 43, figure 26, no. 373). The object has a dark green patina and is in good condition. A similar example which can be found on the database is DOR-AB3C35.
