Title
Post-Medieval to Modern lid handle from a tobacco jar
Description
English: A Post Medieval (AD 1700-1800) lead lid handle from a tobacco jar in the shape of a head.

The piece is in the shape of a head with a sub-circular plinth below the neck. The head has a an almost flat front which appears to have been squashed flat (probably just worn) which has a moulded slightly projecting knows, and eyebrow ridges with domed concave cavities for eye sockets and a transverse grooved line for a mouth. A diagonal band runs around the circumference of the head near its top that may represent tied up hair or the brim of a circular hat. The remains of a tapered shaft project below the plinth which is sub-oval in form.

Overall the object is in fair to good condition, although some detail are worn. It is possibly a female as it looks to be wearing a Medieval head-dress. It has a medium grey colour with patches of white around its surface.

It measures 30.8mm high, 18.0 mm wide, 19.3 mm thick and it weighs 58.76 grams. The diameter of the base of the neck is 16.5mm.

Similar formed examples but with different head designs include DENO-3A81B1, HESH-0517A2 and DUR-B0DA0F. These all suggest the heads are part of the handle of a tobacco jar dating from the post-medieval to modern period, circa 1600-1900 AD.
