Title
Post-medieval : Bodkin
Description
English: TREASURE CASE : 2015 T421.

An incomplete silver dress pin of bodkin type. The bodkin is an elongated triangle in plan with a worn point to one end and a broken forked terminal to the other. The break is across what may have been a longitudinal opening within the body of the bodkin. The section is rectangular and the edges of the object are slightly bevelled. The bodkin has become bent out of shape. The initials "MB" are engraved on one side of the bodkin close to the remains of the opening. The object is otherwise undecorated.

Dimensions:

Length: 87.4mm; Width: 4.3mm; Thickness: 2.1mm; Weight: 4g.

Discussion: The form and decoration of this bodkin are similar to other recorded examples on the PAS database, dated to the seventeenth century: KENT-3F7D97 (2015 T228), SUR-997F8C (2015 T161), LEIC-0CF848 (2014 T50) and SUSS-9D1CE6 (2010 T398).

In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
