Title |
Post-medieval : Hooked tag |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete Early Medieval cast copper alloy single sharp hooked tag or clasp, 7th-12th century AD. The rectangular-sectioned tag has been cast into a trefoil shape with openwork knotted decoration. Along the upper edge the two foils or petals have been bridged by a small bar of copper to form a closed attachment-loop through which the tag could be sewn onto a garment. At the opposite outside edge, a hook projects from the centre of the third foil, but has broken off to leave a blunt projection. The reverse of the mount is slightly concave. The hooked clasp has a uniform olive-green patina, with concretion contained inside the openwork decoration. It measures 19.4mm long, 14.2mm wide and 2.6mm thick. The tag weighs 1.9 grams. The tag is recorded in Read (2008), p.20 ref. 91, and dated to the Early Medieval period. |
