Title |
Post-medieval bell: Crotal bell |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy crotal bell dating to the post-medieval period. The crotal bell is made in one piece but has a girth seam intended to imitate the seam on earlier two-piece bells. The bell is missing its suspension loop that has been seperately moulded and added to the main bell casing; the two holes where the loop would have been inserted can be seen. There is also damage to the upper sounding holes. The upper hemisphere of the bell is undecorated but the lower hemisphere is decorated with the popular 'sunburst' design. The founders' hammer mark symbol can be seen on the underside of the bell on one side of the opening, with the initials D S on the opposite side of the opening, all of which are within a circular border. Research has not confirmed who this maker or foundary is so this remains unidentified. This type of bell dates from the 18th century AD. |
