Title
Post-medieval fragment of an asymmetrical trapezoidal buckle (plan)
Description
English: Fragment of a tinned cast copper alloy asymmetrical buckle frame with openwork decoration in the form of two square apertures and two B-shaped apertures, either side of a diamond-shaped moulding. There are also projections on the outside edge of the frame, in the form of four longer knops and four shorter ones, alternating at intervals. The frame tapers towards the central bar, now missing, which would have held a copper alloy plate and pin. The fragment was probably part of a trapezoidal double-looped buckle, used with a waist girdle, with more ornate openwork decoration on the other side. The closest parallel that the recorder can find in Whitehead (1996) on page 85, No.537 has trilobed openwork moulding at the narrow end and extensive openwork panelling at the wide end. The surface was tinned and certainly the black corroded surface of this fragment suggests that it was also tinned. It also has a cast copper alloy plate and pin that survive, and is dated from c.1620-1680.
