Title
Post-medieval hooked tag
Description
English: Description: An incomplete gilded silver composite hooked tag. The upper half of the plate survives and the rest of the object is missing due to old breaks. The plate was originally trefoil in shape consisting of a separate backplate, cusped around its edge, supporting three domed bosses. The upper two of these now survive together with part of the backplate and a separate attachment loop.

None of the edge of the backplate survives. Each boss is decorated with filigree and granulated ornament. Each boss is surrounded by a border of twisted wire. Within this are three circles of twisted wire, each with an inner small twisted-wire circle with a tiny protruding knop or granule at its centre. In the gaps between the lower edges of the main circles are three more small twisted-wire circles with central granules. There is another granule (without a twisted-wire collar) in the very centre of each boss.

On the reverse of the backplate there is a separate transverse rectangular loop which appears to be soldered on. The silver is now a tarnished grey/black colour with traces of the gilding showing through this patina.

Dimensions: c12.10mm in length, c21.31mm in width, 2.30g in weight.

Discussion: This hooked tag is of Gaimster's, Group I (2002, 161, fig 1, no 1). It is similar in style to an example from Martyr Worthy, Hampshire (Treasure Annual Report 1998-1999, 84, no 210). It is of Read's Class D, Type 6.
