Post-medieval shoe or knee buckle, reverse |
||
Description |
English: A small cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular buckle, probably a shoe buckle: it bowes. The buckle has a single pin with a heart-shaped chape with a single upstanding stud attached to the frame at two centrally drilled holes along its width. The frame is raised around these spindle holes and possesses two pairs of lobed knops on its outer edges; on one edge this pair would have acted as the pin rest. It is very similar to an example in Whitehead (1996, 103; fig. 663) which is dated to the period c. 1690 - c. 1720, although the Whitehead example lacks decorative knops. The buckle features accretions of what appears to be iron corrosion products. |
