Title |
Post-medieval shoe or knee buckle |
||
Description |
English: A slightly corroded, incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval sub-oval shoe or knee buckle (c. 17th century). The frame is bevelled externally on its upper surface and shallowly curved in profile. Both outer edges are rounded. Both ends bear a central transverse depression, one a pin rest. This is within a moulding decorated with an incised pair of nested 'V's, the central incision has a row of punched crescents directly adjacent. At each side of these mouldings is a punched double ring and dot, with a crescent beyond. The incurved sides feature a central triple moulding on the upper surface, divided into equal low knops by pairs of incised lines. Beyond, within a slight groove, are incised crescents that probably form a floral motif. The spindle has been lost, along with the pin and chape. The reverse of the buckle is flat apart from slightly thickened ares around the drilled spindle holes. This artefact has corroded to a dark red-brown colour with patches of dark-green corrosion product. Similar buckle frames can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 98-99; especially ref. 616). |
