Participants celebrating the launch of a tsunami buoy in the Indian Ocean took time to commemorate NOAA’s 200th celebration on the deck of the Indonesian R/V Baruna Jaya III before it left Jakarta in mid-September with the buoy and four NOAA climate buoys on board. Joining some of the senior engineers from the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) were (standing, third from left) U.S. Ambassador Cameron Hume, BPPT Chairman Said Jenie, Dr. Jana of BPPT, Michael Strick of NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), John Shandley of PMEL, Kendall Michel of the NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC), and Dave Parrette of NDBC. In the front row from left are Sidney Thurston of the NOAA Climate Program Office, an unidentified BPTT senior engineer, NOAA Assistant Administrator Richard Spinrad, David McKinnie of the NOAA Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System Project, and Rene Eppi, director of the NOAA Research International Office. |
